Understanding Our Region
“Knowledge is Power.” – Sir Francis Bacon

Mining the Data

The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain knows that effective planning for our communities’ collective future requires an in-depth understanding of the challenges we face. The starting point for such understanding is data. The Foundation has assertively taken on a leadership role in bringing the necessary resources together to spur research, and to partner with others with similar goals. Collectively, and with the proper tools in hand, we can make a difference.

Below are links to a variety of recently completed or ongoing research projects which paint a telling portrait of who we are.

Community Wellbeing Survey

The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain was among dozens of charitable organizations, government agencies, health care providers, universities and others to fund the 2015 Community Wellbeing Survey of Connecticut residents conducted by New Haven-based DataHaven. Of the more than 16,000 state residents surveyed, nearly 1,000 reside in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville or Southington. The Community Foundation is using the study’s results as part of its strategic planning process, and is sharing the study with local leaders for their own planning purposes. Below are links to detailed reports for the towns we serve.

ALICE Report, United Way

In Connecticut, 1-in-4 households have earnings that exceed the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) but fall short of a basic cost of living threshold. These households are called ALICE—an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, and together with the 10 percent of Connecticut households in poverty, more than one-third of Connecticut households (35 percent) are struggling to make ends meet. The Connecticut ALICE report is sponsored by the sixteen Connecticut United Ways, and was released in November 2014.
