Community Foundation of Greater New Britain December Grants Top a Quarter of a Million Dollars

Grants Benefit Berlin, New Britain, Plainville, Southington; Foundation Also Institutes Change in Grant Application Deadlines for 2018

New Britain, Conn., December 15, 2017 – The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has moved one step closer to wrapping up its grantmaking year, awarding more than a quarter of a million dollars in grants and scholarships benefitting Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington.

At its year-end meeting this week, the Community Foundation’s board of directors approved $258,204.83 in grant awards and scholarships to non-profit programs and initiatives ranging from the arts to education to health and human services, including the Foundation’s newly established Hurricane Maria Puerto Rico Relief Fund. The Foundation also announced a change in deadlines for community response grant applications. The new deadlines are February 1 and August 1, effective immediately. A final round of Community Initiatives grants will be announced next week, and a complete summary of the Foundation’s 2017 grantmaking year will be published in January.

Following is a listing of approved Community Foundation grants and scholarships:

Arts, Culture & Heritage

  • New Britain Symphony Orchestra. A $10,000 grant for capacity building support and increased marketing.
  • Shakesperience Productions. A $10,000 grant for a Curricular Enhancement Program for students in the Consolidated School District of New Britain.

Community and Economic Development

  • YWCA of New Britain. A $30,000 grant for a new multi-partner teen center.

Education

  • Ana Grace Project. A $12,000 grant capacity building to retain a fund development consultant.
  • Consolidated School District of New Britain. A $12,000 grant for a Family Intervention Specialist for Pulaski Middle School.
  • Greater New Britain Teen Pregnancy Prevention (Pathways Senderos). A $15,000 grant to support Pathways to Learning the Language of Math.
  • JASON Learning. A $10,000 grant for Next Generation Science Standards professional development opportunities.
  • Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut. A $20,000 grant for capacity building support for community partnerships.
  • The Children’s Museum. A $5,000 grant for the Science Achievement for All program.

Health and Human Services

  • Children in Placement. A $5,000 grant to expand the CIP volunteer program.
  • Children’s Law Canter. A $15,000 grant to support the Legal Representation and Families in Transition programs in New Britain.
  • Friendship Service Center. A $20,000 grant for the Emergency Needs Program.
  • Plainville Community Food Pantry. A $20,000 grant for general operating support and staff training.
  • Plainville Senior Center. An $8,200 grant for a second year of funding of a part-time office assistant.
  • Senior Transportation Services. A $7,500 grant for capacity building to expand STS’s services and the transportation coordinator’s hours.
  • Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs. A $7,500 grant for the LIVESTRONG Program.
  • Hurricane Maria Puerto Rico Relief Fund. A $5,000 grant to the newly established fund at the Community Foundation to match a $10,000 contribution from American Savings Foundation.
  • Consolidated School District of New Britain. Up to $7,500 for needs such as uniforms, winter clothing, hygiene supplies and school supplies for children coming from Puerto Rico who identify as homeless.
  • Warm the Children. A $250 grant to support the program’s efforts to provide warm winter clothing for New Britain children in need.

Community Sponsorship Awards

  • Grace CME Church. A $750 sponsorship of the 3rd Annual Connie Wilson Collins Gala on February 24, 2018.
  • Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut. A $750 sponsorship of the 16th Annual Scrabble Challenge in 2018.
  • New Britain High School. A $713 sponsorship of the Fall for Success event which took place on October 28, 2017.
  • Plainville Choral Society. A $750 sponsorship of performances of a Maritime Musical Review, May 4 and 5, 2018.
  • Plainville Family Resource Network. A $750 sponsorship of the Plainville Family Fest, May 19, 2018.
  • Southington Education Foundation. A $500 sponsorship of the Spring for Education event, February 24, 2018.

  • Mayor’s Trophy Charitable Fund. A total of $18,171.83 in grants to programs and causes including Bike New Britain, Inc., the New Britain Chamber of Commerce’s 104th Annual Meeting, the New Britain High School Marching Band, the Greater New Britain Arts Alliance’s Bees Across New Britain program, ParaDYM Academy, YWCA of New Britain’s House of Teens, New Britain Little League, Hospital of Central Connecticut Auxiliary, Polish American Foundation of Connecticut’s Immigrant Heritage Hall of Fame Gala, Warm the Children of New Britain and New Britain Lady Junior Hurricanes.
  • Benjamin A. Hawley New Britain Day Nursery Fund. A total of $2,000 in grants to support programs and causes including the New Britain Symphony Society, Inc. for the Young People’s Concert 2018, the Prudence Crandall Center and the Consolidated School District of New Britain to support school expenses of Hurricane Maria victims.
  • Rathgeber Family Fund. A total of $820 in grants to support Mooreland Hill School and Greater New Britain Teen Pregnancy Prevention.
  • Schaller Auto World Fund. A $5,000 grant to the Tunxis Community College Foundation for scholarship support of students under the age of 20.
  • Raymond and Frances Wolski Family Fund. An $800 grant to the Consolidated School District of New Britain to implement and support the district’s Student Leadership Program.

  • Alma Exley Scholarship. A $5,000 scholarship to Theodore Martinez of Windsor, a student at the University of Hartford.
  • Dr. Lorraine G. Spranzo Scholarship Fund. A $2,250 scholarship to Leah Ward of Colebrook, a student at Western Connecticut State University.
