James W. McDermott, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund

“Our sixteen year-old son, James W. McDermott, Jr. died on August 9, 1990 in an automobile accident in Berlin, CT. He was to enter his junior year at Berlin High School. He was a beloved son, brother, loyal friend, eagle scout. Our family chose to establish a scholarship in his memory and we turned to the then New Britain Foundation for Public Giving for help. The James W. McDermott, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund began in 1994 and is awarded annually to a Berlin High School senior who meets the established criteria. Close to $25,000 has been awarded to date and many deserving students have benefited financially from the scholarship while pursuing their college programs even though they never knew our son. His memory lives on.” – James W. McDermott, Sr.
