HELPING THOSE IN NEED

HURRICANE MARIA PUERTO RICO RELIEF FUND CONTINUES TO GROW; $31,000-PLUS AND COUNTING

(November 13, 2017) – Within 48 hours of the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria our Community Foundation and the American Savings Foundation, with leadership by State Representative Bobby Sanchez of New Britain, New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart and Marlo Greponne of HRA of New Britain, together established the Hurricane Maria Puerto Rico Relief Fund at the Community Foundation. The fund aims to serve as a central and local charitable hub for those in New Britain and surrounding communities who wish to support, through charitable donations, the more than 3.4 million Puerto Rican citizens ravaged by Hurricane Maria.

Both the American Savings Foundation and the Community Foundation have pledged to cover all administrative fees related to the fund in order to ensure that 100 percent of donations go to help hurricane victims and recovery efforts in Puerto Rico. Grants will be made from the Hurricane Maria Puerto Rico Relief Fund primarily to several Community Action Agencies located in Puerto Rico that will be assisting victims of the hurricane long after the emergency efforts end. Some funding will support displaced families who settle in the Greater New Britain area during the rebuilding.

Through November 10, the fund had received more than $31,000 from individuals, families, foundations, businesses, civic and school groups.
