More than $220,000 in Grants and Scholarships Awarded

Scholarships, Early Childhood Development, Latin Fest Grant Top List of Awards Authorized by Community Foundation of Greater New Britain

New Britain, Conn., July 12, 2016 – The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain recently awarded more than $220,000 in grants and scholarships, including scholarship awards to nearly 70 local students and funding to support a variety of early childhood development programs and initiatives.

Included in the total of $223,902 in awards was a $1,000 Community Sponsorship Award to support Latin Festival 2016, to take place at Walnut Hill Park on August 27.

Scholarships

The Foundation has awarded a total of $190,600 in scholarships to 66 students from high schools in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville, Southington and other area towns. The scholarships come from 46 named scholarship funds held and managed by the Community Foundation. The Foundation has several more scholarship awards to make before the season concludes; a complete listing of Foundation scholars will be announced in August.

First Years First Grants

A total of $12,500 in grants from the Foundation’s First Years First Fund will support programs and initiatives meeting early childhood development needs. The grants include:

Early Childhood Funders Collaborative. A $7,500 grant to continue the work of the Collaborative which aims to support the creation of a coordinated system of early care, education and child development in Connecticut.

Tunxis Early Childhood Professional Educators Consortium. A $5,000 grant to support professional development programming for members of the early care and education workforce.

Donor Advised Grants

Mayor’s Trophy Charitable Fund. A total of more than $4,302 in grants to support the New Britain High School PTO’s Substance Free All-Night Graduation Party; New Britain Police Athletic League; Capital Workforce Partners’ Youth Build and Mental Toughness programs; Klingberg Family Center Annual Car Show; and New Britain High School Athletic Department equipment purchase.

Rotary Club of New Britain-Berlin, Inc. Fund. A total of $4,000 in grants to support Coram Deo; New Britain Industrial Museum; Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut; Hospital for Special Care Ivan Lendl Adaptive Sports Camp; and the Warm the Children Fund.

Bombaci Family Fund. A $10,000 grant to YPI, Inc. for the creative arts.

Lasher Fund in Memory of Douglas S. Lasher. A $1,500 grant to support he Community Foundation of Greater New Britain’s early childhood initiatives.
