Foundation Announces New Robert D. Powers and Dorothy M. Powers Scholarship

February 1, 2021 (New Britain, Conn.) – The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain is proud to announce their newly establish scholarship fund named for a New Britain couple who made a lasting impact on their community.
Robert and Dorothy Powers lived on Fairway Drive in New Britain for 50 of their 60 years together.

Dorothy was born in New Britain in 1925, and attended St. Mary’s School, Nathan Hale Junior High, and graduated from New Britain Senior High School in the Class of 1943. Following high school, Dorothy graduated from Moody’s Secretarial School and was employed at the executive offices of the American Hardware Corp. and the W.L. Hatch Company. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, St. Francis Ladies Guild, New Britain Council of Catholic Women, St. Agnes Guild and New Britain General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.

Robert attended New Britain Schools, graduated from New Britain Senior High School Class of 1943 and then from The University of Connecticut Class of 1949. He was employed by the former Shaw-Walker Company for 35 years, and served as the Hartford Branch Manager for 21 years. An Army Air Force Veteran of World War II, he was a German prisoner of War and was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross, The Air Medal, The Purple Heart and The Prisoner of War Medal. His medals and other memorabilia are on permanent display at the New England Air Museum. He was a life member of American Prisoners of War, the 484th Bomb Group Association, The Caterpillar Club, a life member of The Disabled American Veterans, Chapter #12, Elks Lodge #957, and The New England Air Museum. For many years, Bob was a member and on the board of Directors of The Hartford Rotary Club. He was a Charter Member of Saint Francis of Assisi Church and was proud of his efforts in reviving the Belvedere Neighborhood Reunion Group.

Upon their passing, The Robert D. Powers and Dorothy M. Powers Scholarship was established for graduating high school seniors who live in New Britain pursuing bachelor’s degrees from an accredited four-year college or university. Eligible candidates will demonstrate both financial need and academic ability.
