MORE THAN $200,000 IN GRANTS APPROVED BY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF GREATER NEW BRITAIN

FUNDING SUPPORTS WIDE RANGE OF PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES; NEW BRITAIN MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART AND SOUTHINGTON FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER RECEIVE MAJOR FUNDING

New Britain, Conn., September 20, 2017 – The New Britain Museum of American Art’s Education and Outreach Program and the Southington Public Schools’ Family Resource Center were among the major beneficiaries of more than $200,000 in grants awarded this week by the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain (CFGNB).

The Community Foundation’s Board of Directors approved $216,405 in grants supporting a wide variety of non-profit programs and community initiatives serving Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington. The awards include $16,500 in scholarships. Including grants awarded this year by the Community Chest of New Britain and Berlin, a supporting organization of CFGNB, the Community Foundation’s 2017 grant total now stands at nearly $900,000.

Following is the complete list of approved grants and scholarships:

Arts, Culture & Heritage

  • Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra. A $12,000 grant to hire a part-time individual and corporate giving manager.
  • New Britain Industrial Museum. A $5,000 grant to offset expenses associated with the Museum’s recent relocation.
  • New Britain Youth Theater. A $13,000 grant to fund the start-up of an all-inclusive program.
  • New Britain Museum of American Art. A $50,000 grant for the Museum’s Education and Outreach program.

Community and Economic Development

  • Neighborhood Housing Services of New Britain. A $25,000 grant to support the Community Building and Engagement Program.

Health and Human Services

  • A $15,000 grant to hire a development consultant for the organization’s upcoming capital campaign.
  • A $10,000 grant to renovate a bathroom for the program that serves children with disabilities.

First Years First Fund (Early Childhood Development)

  • Southington Public Schools’ Family Resource Center. A $35,000 grant to match 2017-2018 school system funding for the Center, which provides support, education and programming for Southington families with young children to ensure children enter kindergarten ready to learn.
  • Early Childhood Funders Collaborative. A $7,500 grant to continue the Collaborative’s work aimed at creating a coordinated system early care, education and child development in Connecticut.

Scholarships

  • Ronald F. Gilrain Scholarship Fund. Scholarships of $2,000 each to 2017 New Britain High School graduates Austin Lopez and Dalian Dominguez.
  • David R. Kovacs Scholarship Fund. A $4,000 scholarship to 2014 New Britain High School graduate Dennis Villanueva.
  • Suzanne Beckius Scholarship Fund. A $500 scholarship to 2017 Southington High School graduate Laura
  • Dennis J. Stanek Sr. Memorial Fund. An $8,000 gift to the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA to provide camperships for children to Camp Sloper.

Community Sponsorship Awards

  • Good Cause Gifts. A $750 award to support the Fashion Extravaganza, which supports retail training and employment programs for individuals with disabilities, on November 2, 2017.
  • New Britain Museum of American Art. A $750 award to support December Community Day, a free event to celebrate the winter season with performances and activities on December 10, 2017.
  • New Britain Youth Museum. A $500 award for the Great Pumpkin Festival, a family event with games, crafts and a scavenger hunt on October 21, 2017.
  • New Britain-Berlin YMCA. A $500 award to support the Endless Summer Luau honoring Betty Fumiatti, which took place on September 9, 2017.
  • Pathways Senderos. A $100 award for the 19th Annual Walkathon, which raises funds to create an atmosphere of caring and learning for at-risk youth and their parents, September 24, 2017.
  • Town of Southington. A $1,000 award for the Lighting of the Linear Trail at the White Christmas event on December 1, 2017.
  • Village of Plantsville. A $750 award for Halloween in the Village, a safe place for trick-or-treating where businesses and shops open up their doors for kids in the village, October 26, 2017.
  • YMCA Southington. A $450 award to support the 2017 Apple Harvest Road Race, October 1, 2017.

A $500 grant to First Congregational Church of Southington; a $600 grant to Farrell Treatment Center; a $200 grant to Southington Community Cultural Arts; a $200 grant to the Connecticut Breast Health Initiative; a $200 grant to the YWCA of New Britain Strive Program.
  • Frank and Ernestine Fraprie Fund. A $600 grant to the Hospital of Central Connecticut; a $1,800 grant to CCARC.
  • Susie and Charles Gustin Memorial Fund. A $1,000 grant to Warm the Children for direct service; a $750 grant to Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut; a $750 grant to the New Britain Public Library; a $500 grant to HRA New Britain for direct service to the Osgood Food Pantry.
  • Joan and Charles Leach Fund. A $4,540 grant to the New Britain Family Resource Center for its Early Childhood Program.
  • Mayor’s Trophy Charitable Fund. A $1,450 grant to the Petit Family Foundation; a $250 grant to the Hospital for Special Care Foundation for the Children’s Charities Tennis Classic; a $3,000 grant to CCARC to support the 47th Annual Golf Open; a $2,475 grant to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Connecticut Chapter for Will’s Warriors Team Fundraising Goal; a $150 grant to the New Britain-Berlin YMCA for Endless Summer VIII; a $200 grant to the Connecticut Breast Health Initiative for a Tee Sponsorship; a $150 grant to Friends of New Britain High School Football for a program book donation.
  • Maria Pietrantuono Fund. A $200 grant to the New Britain Academy for Health Professions.
  • Rotary Club of New Britain-Berlin, Inc. Fund. A $1,500 grant to the Hospital for Special Care Foundation Ivan Lendl Adaptive Sports Camp.
  • Spirit of Beth Telfer Memorial Fund. A $490 grant to Southington Community Cultural Arts.
  • Leonard W. and Jeannette C. Varkal Fund. A $300 grant to the New Britain Public Library for books related to contemporary history.
  • Margaret (Rau) & Rudolph Kloiber Memorial Fund. A $500 grant to Central Connecticut State University’s Physical Education and Human Performance Department for Goal Ball equipment, which is a sport originally designed for individuals with visual impairments.
