Berlin Land Trust Establishes Fund to Protect Environment, Preserve Open Space in Berlin and Surrounding Towns
After 25 Years of Successful Land Preservation, Group Looks to Expand Impact
New Britain, Conn. (March 11, 2014) – The Berlin Land Trust, Inc. has established a new fund at the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain (CFGNB), affording existing supporters, new donors, area citizens and conservationists alike with a convenient and easily accessible way to help preserve open space in Berlin and beyond.
The Berlin Land Trust Fund will be held at and managed by the Community Foundation and, like the Trust’s existing endowment which has served its mission for more than 20 years, is designed to advance the Trust’s goals of preserving open space in Berlin and surrounding towns, and educating citizens of the benefits of land preservation.
“The environment in which we live is a gift, and a gift worth protecting for all to enjoy,” said Attorney Dennis Kern of Berlin, president of the Berlin Land Trust, Inc. “The properties owned by the Berlin Land Trust will be protected in perpetuity, and never be used for housing or commercial development.”
“The Berlin Land Trust’s goals are noble and this wonderful new fund offers those who care about our region yet another way in which to make their charitable vision a reality through the Community Foundation,” said CFGNB President Jim Williamson.
The Berlin Land Trust, Inc. is coming off a major year of acquisitions in 2013, having acquired through various means some 31 acres of land, including: 14 acres of forested land near the Cromwell line on the Mattabassett River; nine acres of land atop Lamentation Mountain; six acres of open space on a ridge near the Southington line; and a two-acre bird sanctuary in Kensington.
Founded in 1988, the Trust owns approximately 250 acres of open space. While the group’s roots are in Berlin, its land preservation focus extends beyond Berlin to Cromwell, Middletown, New Britain, Rocky Hill, Southington and beyond.
