Community Foundation Awards More Than $300,000 in Grants

$150,000 Capital Grant to Hospital of Central Connecticut Cancer Center Highlights First Round of 2015 Community Funding

New Britain, Conn., May 13, 2015 – A $150,000 capital grant to support Hartford Healthcare’s newly opened Cancer Institute at The Hospital of Central Connecticut (THOCC) headlines more than $300,000 in grants recently awarded by the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain.

The Community Foundation’s board of directors recently approved $305,351 in discretionary community grants to non-profit organizations and programs serving Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington. In addition to capital funding for the THOCC Cancer Institute, other funding highlights included major grants to the New Britain Museum of American Art, Consolidated School District of New Britain, Plainville Community Food Pantry and Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs.

The funding marks the Foundation’s first round of community grants in 2015. Last year, the Foundation awarded $1.4 million in grants throughout its four-town service area.

Following is a listing of all first-round grants by category:

Arts, Culture and Heritage

New Britain Museum of American Art, $50,000. To support the Museum’s education and outreach programs.

Education

Consolidated School District of New Britain, $20,000. To support CSDNB’s Summer Enrichment Experience program aimed at helping students avoid summer learning loss.

Southington Public Schools, $4,500. To provide additional staffing to develop and implement the Adult Daily Living Social Skills Program for highly-functioning students with autism at Southington High School.

Health and Human Services

Hospital of Central Connecticut, $150,000. A capital grant to support the recently opened Hartford Healthcare Cancer Institute at The Hospital of Central Connecticut.

Plainville Community Food Pantry, $20,000. To provide general operating support to help the pantry keep up with increased demand for services.

Plainville Senior Center, $8,351. To maintain a part-time staff person to recruit, train and manage volunteers

Sienna Learning Center, $2,500. To help the Center, which helps adults in the Greater New Britain area improve their English speaking and literacy skills, accommodate 14 adult learners currently on the waiting list.

Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs, $50,000. To support the YMCA’s Extend the Legacy Capital Campaign, specifically renovation of the YMCA pool.
