2016 Grants and Initiatives

In 2016 the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain awarded a total of $1,387,521.90 in grants and scholarships. Thank you for your support!

First Years First

We believe that preparing the children of Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington for success in school and in life by enhancing their early childhood development education experience is fundamental to any meaningful expression of the Foundation’s mission.

  • Up to $5,000 to the Coalition for New Britain’s Youth to match funds provided by the Campaign for Grade Level Reading to integrate Vroom materials, tools and resources into the community in order to support parent success and improve school readiness.  Vroom materials and resources make it easy for parents and caregivers of children ages 0-5 to have a positive impact on their child’s brain development by turning everyday moments into “brain building” moments.
  • $50,000 to the Coalition of New Britain’s Youth for support of the Coalition’s work in New Britain which focuses on improving the lives of children and youth, birth through age twenty-four.
  • $10,000 to the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance for enhanced outreach, education and advocacy to improve and better coordinate early childhood services for children and families.
  • $17,556 to the Consolidated School District of New Britain to fund 2,960 hours of parent educator services to provide Parents as Teachers personal visits and supports to enhance parent capacity and promote health childhood development and school eradiness for 15 families.
  • $20,000 to the Consolidated School District of New Britain to support the 2016 Summer Enrichment Experience (SEE) to help New Britain students in grades 1 through 4 to avoid summer learning loss.
  • Up to $30,000 to the Early Childhood Collaborative of Southington to support staffing, infrastructure, and expenses associated with the implementation of the Community Plan for Southington’s Young Children, aimed a fulfilling the ECCS mission that Southington children enter kindergarten ready to learn.
  • Up to $20,000 to the Family Resource Center of Southington for general operating support.
  • $7,500 to the Early Childhood Funders Collaborative to continue the work of the Collaborative which aims to support the creation of a coordinated system of early care, education and child development in Connecticut.
  • $40,000 to Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut to support the Central Connecticut Family Literacy Center which provides high-quality literacy programming for low literate parents so they can support their children’s success in school, make progress towards their goals, and improve self-sufficiency.
  • $23,261 to Plainville Community Schools to enhance early learning opportunities for preschool students during their literacy rotation by adding five iPads to seven classrooms and purchase non-fiction, culturally diverse literature, dress up clothes, and related pretend-play items.
  • $2,934 to the Plainville Family Resource Center to provide the Conscious Discipline series to Plainville parents and educators.
  • $35,000 matching grant to Southington Public Schools to support 2016-2017 school year programming at the Family Resource Center of Southington.
  • $5,000 to the Tunxis Early Childhood Professional Educators Consortium to support professional development programming for members of the early care and education work force.

We believe that when the Foundation supports arts, culture and heritage programs, we not only enhance the quality of life for all residents in those communities, but also invest in the long-term economic vitality and well-being of the Greater New Britain area.

    from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund, to fund family dance mob classes.
  • Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, $7,500
    from the Donald W. and Virginia C. Davis Fund to provide second year support of the part-time Operations Manager and to fund marketing for the 20th anniversary season.
  • New Britain Museum of American Art, $60,000
    from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary, Justus S. and Lillian F. Beach, and Talcott Stanley Funds to support the Outreach and Education Program.
  • New Britain Public Library, $1,550
    from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary, to fund hip-hop dance classes for children and young adults.
  • Plainville Public Library, $1,500
    from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund, to fund classes to help maintain childhood stress with yoga, meditation, art, and gardening.
  • Plainville Public Library, $3,000
    from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary, Walter H. Dickman, and Marjorie Wright Tomlinson Funds, to purchase materials for a puppet theater and take home kits for families.
  • Shakesperience Productions, Inc., $10,000
    from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary, Ted and Nancy Johnson, and Robert A. and Phyllis T. Mugford Funds, to provide a Curricular Enhancement Program for students in the New Britain Public School System.
  • Southington Public Schools, $7,200
    from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary, Ronald and Alice Gilrain, and Andrews-Hicks Memorial Funds, for the third year support of a partnership between the Southington Public Schools and the New Britain Museum of American Art that will enrich instruction in and exposure to the arts for all Southington 3rd graders.

We believe in the saying that “knowledge is power.” When the Foundation invests in education, it is helping to provide citizens with a key that can help open many doors.

    from the Stanley and Bernice Shepard Fund, Johnstone Vance Memorial Fund, Vic and Jane Darnell Fund, Ronald and Alice Gilrain Fund for general operating support.

    from the Jeannette Elizabeth Westlake Memorial, Georgia Knapp Thomson, and Anonymous funds for a capital grant to create financial skills labs.

    from the William T. Livingston Memorial Fund, Spencer P. Torell Fund, and Spencer P. Torell FundCon Fed Charitable Fund to hire an AmeriCorps Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) member for the 2016-2017 year to aid in its organizational development.
  • New Britain Satellite Careers Academy, $2,800
    from the Vincenta Alverio Memorial Fund to fund programs and projects for young Latina Women in the Youth & Leadership Empowerment Group.
  • ParaDYM Academy, $15,000
    from the J. Edward and Justine B. Melson Family, Ted and Nancy Howe, Charles L. Munford, Jr., Memorial, Frances P. Parker, and Howland Rogers Family Fund for ParaDYM Academy to expand their afterschool program to include music and coding modules.
  • Siena Learning Center, $9,000
    from the Ted and Nancy Johnson Fund, A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund, and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to accommodate SLC’s waiting list and extend Wi-Fi throughout the classroom spaces.

Health and Human Services

We believe that having access to services that help maintain or improve health, or which help citizens gain access to basic human services, is fundamental to quality of life.

  • The Ana Grace Project, $15,000
    from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary, Grove Hill Medical Center, and Howland Rogers Family Funds, for Capacity Building to hire a capacity building grant to hire a fund development consultant.
  • Bread for Life, $50,000
    from the Weld Fund for Capital Needs, and Johnstone Vance Memorial Fund for a 1:1 matching grant towards BFL’s new building.
  • Children’s Law Center of Connecticut, $15,000
    from the Louis G. and Ada C. Amodio Fund for Children, Junior League of Greater New Britain Fund, and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to support the Legal Representation and Families in Transition programs in New Britain.
  • Coalition for New Britain’s Youth, up to $10,000
    from the William E. Attwood Jr., Elizabeth J. Berry, Con Fed Charitable, and A. W. Stanley Discretionary funds to support the cost of having New Britain represented as a finalist in Denver for the All-America City Award, an award given annually by the National Civic League to ten communities in the United States and recognizing cities whose citizens work together to identify and tackle community-wide challenges and achieve uncommon results.

    from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to support the Working Cities Challenge.

    from the Development Consortium Fund of Greater New Britain for additional capacity building training for non-profit organizations who participated in a spring 2016 session funded by the Catalyst Fund.
