In 2016 the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain awarded a total of $1,387,521.90 in grants and scholarships. Thank you for your support!
First Years First
We believe that preparing the children of Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington for success in school and in life by enhancing their early childhood development education experience is fundamental to any meaningful expression of the Foundation’s mission.
- Up to $5,000 to the Coalition for New Britain’s Youth to match funds provided by the Campaign for Grade Level Reading to integrate Vroom materials, tools and resources into the community in order to support parent success and improve school readiness. Vroom materials and resources make it easy for parents and caregivers of children ages 0-5 to have a positive impact on their child’s brain development by turning everyday moments into “brain building” moments.
- $50,000 to the Coalition of New Britain’s Youth for support of the Coalition’s work in New Britain which focuses on improving the lives of children and youth, birth through age twenty-four.
- $10,000 to the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance for enhanced outreach, education and advocacy to improve and better coordinate early childhood services for children and families.
- $17,556 to the Consolidated School District of New Britain to fund 2,960 hours of parent educator services to provide Parents as Teachers personal visits and supports to enhance parent capacity and promote health childhood development and school eradiness for 15 families.
- $20,000 to the Consolidated School District of New Britain to support the 2016 Summer Enrichment Experience (SEE) to help New Britain students in grades 1 through 4 to avoid summer learning loss.
- Up to $30,000 to the Early Childhood Collaborative of Southington to support staffing, infrastructure, and expenses associated with the implementation of the Community Plan for Southington’s Young Children, aimed a fulfilling the ECCS mission that Southington children enter kindergarten ready to learn.
- Up to $20,000 to the Family Resource Center of Southington for general operating support.
- $7,500 to the Early Childhood Funders Collaborative to continue the work of the Collaborative which aims to support the creation of a coordinated system of early care, education and child development in Connecticut.
- $40,000 to Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut to support the Central Connecticut Family Literacy Center which provides high-quality literacy programming for low literate parents so they can support their children’s success in school, make progress towards their goals, and improve self-sufficiency.
- $23,261 to Plainville Community Schools to enhance early learning opportunities for preschool students during their literacy rotation by adding five iPads to seven classrooms and purchase non-fiction, culturally diverse literature, dress up clothes, and related pretend-play items.
- $2,934 to the Plainville Family Resource Center to provide the Conscious Discipline series to Plainville parents and educators.
- $35,000 matching grant to Southington Public Schools to support 2016-2017 school year programming at the Family Resource Center of Southington.
- $5,000 to the Tunxis Early Childhood Professional Educators Consortium to support professional development programming for members of the early care and education work force.

from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary, Ted and Nancy Johnson, and Robert A. and Phyllis T. Mugford Funds, to provide a Curricular Enhancement Program for students in the New Britain Public School System. - Southington Public Schools, $7,200
from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary, Ronald and Alice Gilrain, and Andrews-Hicks Memorial Funds, for the third year support of a partnership between the Southington Public Schools and the New Britain Museum of American Art that will enrich instruction in and exposure to the arts for all Southington 3rd graders.

Health and Human Services
We believe that having access to services that help maintain or improve health, or which help citizens gain access to basic human services, is fundamental to quality of life.
