Plate It Forward Southington Charitable Fund
What is “Plate it Forward Southington”?
Plate it Forward Southington is a heartwarming food-sharing initiative created and initially funded by the Friday Morning Breakfast Club (FMBC), a local business networking group founded by Realtor Gary Brummett in early 2022. FMBC members meet bi-monthly for breakfast and business discussions, featuring guest speakers, best practice sharing, and brainstorming solutions to business challenges. They gather at various restaurants around town, contributing to a fund each quarter to cover breakfast costs. Any remaining funds are donated to local nonprofits.
Plate it Forward Southington operates on a pay-it-forward model. When you purchase a meal at a participating restaurant, you can also buy a second meal for someone in need. The receipt for this pre-paid meal is posted on the Plate it Forward Southington board inside the restaurant. Food-insecure individuals can then visit the restaurant, pick a receipt from the board, and receive the meal, either to dine in or take away. A “one per person per day” rule is gently encouraged.
You can “adopt” a restaurant by donating directly to the establishment, allowing them to put up more meals on their boards for those in need.
The benefits of this initiative extend beyond just providing a meal. It fosters a sense of community and belonging, showing those in need that they are surrounded by caring and generous neighbors. The hope is that one day, those who receive meals will be able to pay it forward to others in need.
