Community Foundation Awards More than $280,000 in Grants

Funding Supports Programs Serving Berlin, New Britain, Plainville, Southington

New Britain, Conn., September 18, 2018 – In its second round of funding of the year, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has awarded more than $280,000 in grants to a wide variety of community programs serving Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington.

The Community Foundation’s board of directors recently approved $286,171 in grant awards in the Community Response category, discretionary grants that are selected by the board to meet a variety of community needs. Grants were made to 21 programs and organizations serving the Foundation’s four-town service area.

Following is a listing of recently approved Community Foundation grants:

Arts, Culture & Heritage

New Britain Museum of American Art. A $50,000 grant from an Anonymous Fund and the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to support the museum’s education and outreach programs.

New Britain Public Library. A $1,500 grant from the Elizabeth J. Berry Fund and the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to provide citizenship classes for area residents.

No Boundaries Youth Theater (Berlin). A $5,000 grant from the Con Fed Charitable Fund and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund for to establish a merit-based scholarship program.

Sonia Plumb Dance Company (Hartford). A $7,000 grant from the Donald W. and Virginia C. Davis Fund and Howland Rogers Family Fund for Turning the Triangle to bring the Geometry and Dance Program to elementary schools in New Britain.

Community and Economic Development

Neighborhood Housing Services of New Britain. Inc. A $30,000 grant from the Anna T. Deutsch Fund, Andrews-Hicks Memorial Fund and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to support the Community Building and Engagement Program.

Education

Connecticut Storytelling Center (New London). A $7,000 grant from the Talcott Stanley Fund and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund for Start With Stories, a program that brings storytellers into elementary schools in New Britain.

Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters (Hartford). A $20,000 grant from the Ted and Nancy Johnson Fund and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund for the Community Based Mentoring & mentor2.0 programs in Greater New Britain.

Opportunities Industrialization Center of New Britain, Inc. A $10,000 grant from the Robert A. and Phyllis T. Mugford Fund and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund for the Men in Color Program.

Siena Learning Center (New Britain). An $11,175 grant from the Edmund G. Noyes Fund and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to accommodate the center’s waiting list and technology upgrades.

Health and Human Services

Boys & Girls Club of New Britain, Inc. A $20,000 grant from the Howland Rogers Family Fund and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund for Youth Development Programs.

Children’s Law Center of Connecticut (Hartford). A $12,500 grant from the Frances P. Parker Fund and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund for the Legal Representation & Families in Transition programs in Greater New Britain.

Connecticut Legal Services, Inc. (New Britain). A $10,000 grant from the Georgia Knapp Thomson Fund and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to support strategic planning and website redesign.

Connecticut Women’s Education and Legal Fund (Hartford). A $5,000 grant from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to support expansion of the Legal Education program in Greater New Britain.

CW Resources (New Britain). A $10,000 grant from the Weld Fund for Capital Needs and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund for a Well-Being in Retirement program.

The Hospital of Central Connecticut (New Britain). A $30,668 grant from the Stanley and Bernice Shepard Fund, A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund and Carolyn’s Healthy Environment Fund for SIM Laboratory upgrades.

Living in Safe Alternatives, Inc. (Southington). A $10,000 grant from the Marjorie Wright Tomlinson Fund and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to support a feasibility study.

Salvation Army (New Britain). A $15,000 grant from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund for the Pathway to Hope program in Greater New Britain.

Senior Transportation Services (New Britain). A $6,128 grant from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund for technology upgrades for new computers and a printer to support operations.

Town of Southington, Parks and Recreation Department. A $6,700 grant from the Weld Fund for Capital Needs for a new ADA compliant pool lift chair for the public pool.

Wheeler Clinic, Inc. (Plainville). A $15,000 grant from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund for a new Nutrition Wellness Program in Greater New Britain.

YWCA of New Britain. A $3,500 grant from the Howland Rogers Family Fund to sponsor a Photo Voice presentation at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference.
